Blood-brain barrier penetration ✓

H₂ does cross the blood-brain barrier. Its small molecular size makes this physically possible in a way that is not the case for most antioxidant molecules. Multiple animal and human studies have found neurological markers of oxidative stress reduction following hydrogen water consumption.

Athletic recovery ✓ (with caveats)

Broader health claims—more caution warranted

Echo Flask

Brecka's primary hydrogen water bottle recommendation. He upgraded from the Echo Go+ to the Echo Flask in 2025, citing higher hydrogen concentration (up to 8 ppm vs 4.5 ppm) and smart technology features. His testimonial appears on echowater.com and the Echo Go+ Amazon listing carried his official "Recommended by" tag. The Echo Go+ has been discontinued and replaced by the Echo Flask. If you see content still listing the Go+ as his recommendation, it is outdated. H2Tab hydrogen tablets

Brecka also promotes H2Tab for travel and daily convenience. Cole Brecka, Gary's son, is a co-founder. H2Tab claims 8–12 ppm output, though real-world concentration depends on water volume, temperature, sealing, and how quickly the water is consumed after dissolution. Brecka's protocol: one H2Tab tablet dissolved in 10–12 oz of water first thing in the morning.

Lumati

In May 2025, Brecka joined the advisory board of Lumati, a California-based hydrogen company. Lumati's product range covers the full spectrum of H₂ delivery methods: the Hydrogen Bottle V2 ($200) for daily hydration, the Inhalation 1800 ($5,000) and Inhalation Pro ($9,000) for home and clinic inhalation therapy at 1,200 and 2,400 mL/min respectively, and an Immersion Generator ($9,000) for hydrogen bath sessions. Products are independently tested by H2 Analytics. Brecka promotes hydrogen baths as a recovery protocol. H2Tab produces a bath tablet product as well. The research base for transdermal hydrogen absorption is thinner than for oral consumption.

How the K8 ionizer compares

The K8 by Enagic® is a countertop water ionizer that produces hydrogen-rich alkaline water continuously via electrolysis. It is relevant here because several properties Brecka describes as important in a hydrogen water device are produced by the K8—and because the K8 addresses a limitation of tablets and portable bottles that Brecka's protocols don't resolve.

Hydrogen concentration: The K8 produces dissolved molecular hydrogen as a byproduct of electrolysis. Source water: H2Tab tablets and most portable PEM bottles (including Hydra Cup, Piurify, and Lourdes) deliver hydrogen into whatever water you put in them—including tap water with chlorine, PFAS, or other contaminants. Hydrogen carries whatever is in your water. The K8 passes source water through a carbon pre-filter (the FC1) before electrolysis, reducing chlorine by approximately 97.5%. Households with elevated contaminants can add further pre-filtration (the Enametix for PFAS, lead, and fluoride; the Black filter for chloramine utilities).

Negative ORP: Beyond molecular hydrogen, the K8 produces water with a negative oxidation-reduction potential (typically -200 to -800 mV), meaning electron-donating properties. Tablets produce H₂ but not the pH shift or negative ORP that electrolysis generates. Whether the additional ORP benefit is clinically meaningful is a separate research question, but it is a property that the K8 produces that tablets do not.

Scale and cost: The K8 retails at approximately $5,890. H2Tab tablets are substantially cheaper per day of use in absolute terms, but the comparison depends on how many years of daily use you are planning for and whether source water filtration is separately accounted for.

The honest comparison: tablets and portable bottles are the accessible entry point and produce measurable H₂. The K8 is a continuous, filtered, freshly-produced source that integrates hydrogen generation into your daily tap water rather than requiring a separate protocol step.

Gary Brecka salt water and hydrogen water

Brecka is also known for recommending structured salt intake—specifically high-mineral sea salt (he promotes Baja Gold mineral sea salt)—as part of his hydration protocol. His salt water protocol is separate from his hydrogen water protocol, but they're often used together.

The connection to hydrogen water: mineral content in water affects electrolysis efficiency. The K8 and other ionizers require dissolved minerals in source water to conduct electrolysis effectively, which is why RO-filtered water requires remineralisation before ionization. Brecka's emphasis on mineral-rich water as a foundation for hydration is consistent with the conditions that support effective ionizer performance.

One note worth adding: sea salt has been found to contain microplastics in multiple studies, with concentrations varying significantly by brand and origin. If microplastic contamination is part of your water quality concern, it's worth knowing that salt is a potential additional source—and that sea salt marketed as "mineral-rich" is not exempt.

Gary Brecka water filter: why source water matters before you add hydrogen

One thing Brecka's protocols don't explicitly address is what's in the water before hydrogen is added to it. H2Tab tablets, the Echo Flask, and portable PEM bottles all generate dissolved molecular hydrogen in whatever water you put in them. If that water contains chlorine, chloramines, PFAS, lead, or nitrates, those contaminants come through alongside your hydrogen dose.

Hydrogen is not a filter. It doesn't remove anything from your source water. The antioxidant properties of H₂ are real, but they don't neutralise waterborne contaminants. A glass of hydrogen-rich water can simultaneously contain PFAS and molecular hydrogen. These are independent properties.

This is the practical case for checking your tap water before choosing a hydrogen water device:

What to look for in a hydrogen water device

Whether or not you are following Brecka's specific protocol, the device quality factors he has cited across his content are legitimate:

Independent third-party testing: Gas chromatograph analysis by an independent lab (such as H2 Analytics) is the only concentration measurement that counts. Manufacturer self-reported ppm figures vary enormously and are not standardised.

SPE/PEM technology: Proton exchange membrane technology is the standard for producing pure H₂ without ozone or chlorine byproducts. Cheaper devices using direct electrolysis without PEM may produce undesirable byproducts alongside H₂.

Sealed container and immediate consumption: H₂ off-gasses quickly. Brecka correctly notes that you should seal, shake, and drink promptly. For tablets, this means dissolving in a sealed bottle and consuming within minutes.

Source water quality: Hydrogen does not remove contaminants. If your source water contains chlorine, lead, PFAS, or other contaminants, these come through with your hydrogen water unless the device includes filtration. Continuous consumption vs a single daily dose

One advantage of a countertop ionizer that Brecka's tablet and bottle protocols don't address is what happens the rest of the day. A morning tablet protocol or a single bottle produces a bolus dose that peaks and diminishes. An ionizer replaces your ordinary tap water entirely—every glass you pour throughout the day is hydrogen-rich, fresh from the machine.

The research supports this as meaningfully different from single-dose protocols. One honest caveat: some researchers have noted that continuous antioxidant exposure may theoretically blunt adaptive responses to exercise. Sessions typically involve inhaling 2–4% H₂ gas through a nasal cannula for 15–30 minutes. One analysis calculates that a single 30-minute inhalation session delivers the equivalent of the hydrogen dissolved in approximately 18,000 glasses of water. It is a clinical protocol, not a replacement for hydrogen water consumption, and requires a dedicated device.

Brecka has referenced H₂ inhalation in his content as a higher-dose option. It is not something the K8 or any drinking water device provides. The two delivery methods are complementary, not interchangeable. If inhalation therapy is part of a protocol, drinking hydrogen-rich water throughout the day still addresses systemic oxidative stress in a way that periodic inhalation sessions do not sustain continuously.

On that basis, drinking 2–3 litres of K8 water throughout the day at a realistic 1.0–1.5 ppm delivers 2–4.5 mg total, comfortably within the MHI range.

A high-ppm bottle used once produces a concentrated bolus. An ionizer at lower ppm consumed continuously across the day can easily match or exceed the same total dose—with the added advantage that each glass is fresh from the machine, meaning H₂ hasn't had time to dissipate. H₂ off-gasses within hours in an open container; freshness at the point of consumption matters as much as the headline ppm figure.

The honest comparison: don't compare ppm figures between devices. Compare total daily mg H₂ actually consumed, accounting for volume, freshness, and how many sessions per day are realistic for the protocol.
